American dry-fly fishing was born here. The Willowemoc and the Beaverkill meet at Junction Pool in Roscoe, and the water between and around them has drawn anglers for well over a century — this is hallowed ground the way Cooperstown is for baseball, except you can wade into it.

The water
The Willowemoc flows through Livingston Manor itself — you can be on it minutes after finishing coffee. The Beaverkill, its more famous sibling, runs the next valley over, with storied pools whose names anglers trade like scripture. Where they converge at Junction Pool in Roscoe ("Trout Town USA," ten minutes away), tradition says trout pause, unable to decide which river to swim up. Further afield, the Neversink and the Delaware round out one of the densest concentrations of quality trout water in the eastern U.S.
Gear, guides & history
Dette Flies
On Main Street sits the oldest family-run fly shop in the world — nearly a century of tying flies for these specific rivers. Go for flies and honest advice about what's hatching; they also arrange lessons and guided float or wade trips if you're starting out.
Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum
Just outside town, the museum tells the story of the sport's American birthplace — rods, reels, flies, and the characters who made the Catskills famous. Worth an hour even for non-anglers.
Know before you cast
You'll need a New York State fishing license (easy to buy online). The classic season opens April 1 — opening day is a local holiday — and spring hatches bring the busiest, most exciting weeks. Summer fishing turns to early mornings and evenings; fall is quiet and beautiful. Check current regulations for the specific stretch you're fishing, as some sections are catch-and-release.
Staying at the cottage? The Willowemoc access points are minutes away, and there's room in the mudroom for waders and rods — plus a hot tub for after.
Black Bear Cottage is a renovated 1902 home on three wooded acres, two miles from Main Street — hot tub, fire pit, chef's kitchen, sleeps 8. Rated 5.0 on Airbnb.
